Hey everyone, welcome to this edition of the FBL, or the Feel Better Letter.
This is Matt.
And today, I want to talk about why being good enough is better than being perfect.
One of the things that gets people stuck is this idea of perfection.
Perfection, by its very nature, is an illusion.
We can never be perfect at anything.
So when you’re trying to be perfect, it’s already a false setup — a false expectation for yourself.
A lot of people won’t act unless they feel like they can do something perfectly.
Or they use perfectionism as a reason not to act at all.
And that’s the trap.
Because if you’re not willing to act until you can be perfect — and perfection isn’t actually possible — then you stay stuck.
Perfectionism is really, as one of our team members, Coach Guy says, procrastination in disguise.
When it comes to having a plan and executing it, we have to realize that doing something at a “good enough” level — even a B-minus level — is far better than waiting to execute some perfect A+ plan.
You’re not going to be perfect.
On days when anxiety is high and your mind is racing, you’re not going to perfectly eliminate all compulsions.
You’re not going to perfectly apply the Triple-A Response.
You’re not going to do anything perfectly.
But instead of getting discouraged or giving up because you can’t be perfect, it’s far more effective to say:
“I’m going to aim for good enough.”
“I’m going to show up and do B-plus, B-minus, or even C-plus work today.”
Because you’re still moving in the right direction.
It’s actually through the difficult days — through the storms — that you refine your practice and improve.
And it’s through your mistakes that you learn the most.
So the pursuit of perfection is its own trap.
It’s just procrastination with a different label.
Because sometimes we don’t want to admit that we’re procrastinating.
But being good enough… is enough.
You don’t need to be perfect to succeed.
But you do need to show up.
You need to put in effort when it’s hard.
You need to show up for yourself every day.
You need to get 1% better each day.
Over time, that consistent effort is what allows these skills to become habits — and those habits are what ultimately help you break free from the loop.
The process is messy.
You’re never going to be perfect.
But you don’t need to be.
You just need to be good enough.
So that’s my message for today.
If you’re looking for coaching, guidance, and support as you implement this, we have some spots opening up in Taking Back Control (TBC).
Inside the program, we offer six live group sessions each week, where you can get coaching, support, feedback, and be part of a community going through the same process.
If that’s something you’re interested in, feel free to fill out an application — we’ll link it below and follow up with next steps.
Wishing you all a great day and a great week.
